OREGON, Bend.  Oregon Health & Science University, (OHSU), is a leading health and research university that strives for excellence in patient care, education, research and community service.  Casey Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology at OHSU is recruiting a full-time Pediatric Ophthalmologist to work with our current group of seven faculty, one fellow and six orthoptists.

This position will join an established and highly regarded University-based practice with clinical, research and educational responsibilities, and will hold an academic appointment.  It has a strong established referral base and active surgical load.  The group practice consists of 8 optometrists and 52 ophthalmologists offering sub-specialty services in cornea, vitreoretinal disease, ophthalmic pathology and oncology, uveitis and ocular immunology, glaucoma, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, low vision and ophthalmic genetics.

Function/Duties of Position

This position is under the supervision of the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, Oregon Health & Science University, Casey Eye Institute.  The primary duties include:  Providing comprehensive eye care to pediatric and strabismus patients of the University Hospital affiliated hospitals and clinics in Bend, Oregon; performing Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) exams; providing staffing to residents seeing pediatric and strabismus patients; teaching medical students, residents, fellows, orthoptists and house staff in pediatric ophthalmology; patient care and research within the subspecialty; serve and support the department’s relationship with the Oregon State Elks Association. This position has the opportunity to implement research and/or special programs based on the needs of the population and in conjunction with Casey faculty based on the interests of the candidate.

Clinical:  Clinic schedule will be assigned by departmental leadership (Chair, Department of Ophthalmology and Division Head of the Elks Children’s Eye Clinic). Clinical activities will be providing care to pediatric and strabismus patients. This clinical activity will occur in a pediatric ophthalmology designed and equipped office location Bend, Oregon. A minimum of 6 half-day clinic sessions will be held per week and clinical support will include a full-time orthoptist to assist in the care of pediatric and adult patients with strabismus. Surgery will be performed at a local surgery center where expertise in pediatric anesthesiology is available. There will be opportunities to collaborate with other OHSU pediatric subspecialists who attend clinics in the community and the candidate will be encouraged to serve as a local and regional resource in support of pediatricians and family practitioners in the care of children with ocular disorders and vision threatening conditions,

Education:  OHSU is a teaching facility and you may be expected to teach medical students and residents as well through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year. Full engagement with all teaching activities including resident case conferences, journal clubs, grand rounds and CME events will be facilitated through virtual platforms and periodic in-person attendance at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, OR.

Research:  There are resources available for start-up research and on-going support via established processes and opportunities. Faculty interested in doing research may be eligible to apply for departmental research assistance and non-clinical time through the Director of Research. Research addressing efforts to improve access to care in rural and under resourced communities and populations is a high Departmental priority and will be actively supported.

Administration:  Administrative and other duties may be assigned based on department needs and your areas of expertise and interest. There will be opportunities to participate in departmental management and to serve on institutional committees.

Position Conditions/Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must be board certified or board eligible and have a strong interest in teaching and/or clinical research. Oregon and Washington state medical licensure is required. Fellowship-trained practitioners and/or fellows currently in training are encouraged to apply.

Strong clinical and patient assessment skills. Meticulous in all aspects of work. Requires excellent organizational skills and strong communication and patient relations skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with employees at all levels of the organization is essential. Demonstrated innovation, initiative, and creative problem-solving skills are imperative. Must be pro-active and detail oriented. Ability to work well independently and multi-task is critical.  Ability to plan and organize technical work and to adapt to a changing work environment is critical. Must be able to assess and develop work tasks and systems in order to optimize clinic performance.

Education and Experience:  Completion of fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology. Requires a current, valid MD license and completion of an accredited residency program and pediatrics fellowship training. Must be board certified or eligible by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
