AUPO's membership consists of academic team members who are designated as the Chair, Residency Program Director, Associate Residency Program Director, Medical Student Education Director, Research Director, or Senior Administrator at departments or divisions of ophthalmology:

• in medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in the United States;
• with ophthalmology residency training programs accredited by the ACGME in other teaching institutions in the United States;
• accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (RCPS) in Canada and affiliated with a Canadian medical school.
