Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine, a national leader in research, education, and clinical care, is announcing the search for Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a visionary leader to provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the Department, including education, research, and clinical care.
The Department of Ophthalmology is renowned for its extensive teaching, research and service record which has helped to advance eye health for patients in Indiana and beyond. The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute is home to the department, providing modern space for research, clinical, educational, and administrative activities. The department operates several clinics, including clinics at Eskenazi Health, IU Health, Riley Hospital for Children, and the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC. The department collaborates closely with the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute and the Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases pursuing basic, translational and clinical research focused on conditions including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and pediatric eye diseases. Exciting collaborations and funding opportunities have arisen out of the department's recent developments, such as a breakthrough for the treatment of neovascular eye diseases and the first-ever model of an eye for the study of glaucoma and spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome. The department's research funding has seen a marked increase in recent years, growing to more than $24 million and earning it a 34th place national rank in NIH funding. IU School of Medicine is the largest medical school in the country with more than 25,000 alumni and 3,000 learners on nine campuses across the state. Its diverse faculty is made up of 3,095 full-time members and 3,783 volunteer faculty responsible for training medical, graduate, and postgraduate students. IU School of Medicine is the only allopathic medical school in Indiana.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in academic leadership across the tripartite clinical, education, and research missions. Additional qualifications include a national reputation in Ophthalmology, a record of scholarship in the discipline, and documented success of leading strategic initiatives. The administrative expectations include leadership of the faculty, staff, and learners such as programmatic oversight, faculty recruitment, and fiscal responsibilities. Doctorate or Terminal degree is required. Minimum qualifications include an MD or MD/PhD. Applicants must be board certified/board eligible and able to obtain a license to practice medicine in Indiana. Academic appointment type is open and will be determined based on academic credentials. The individual selected for this position must be a highly accomplished leader with exceptional communication, interpersonal, and change management skills, as well as demonstrating a strong commitment to upholding our core values, including promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
