Ophthalmology

The Vision Institute at UPMC is seeking three BC/BE Comprehensive Ophthalmologists to join our team. The new associate will have the opportunity to practice truly "comprehensive" comprehensive ophthalmology and will help to grow the department's ophthalmic primary care effort by fostering ties to the primary and specialty care physicians. Responsibilities will involve teaching and precepting residents in our hospitals, eye urgent care center, clinics, and operating rooms. Clinical practice opportunities are available at the UPMC Mercy, UPMC Shadyside and UPMC Oakland campuses and at our Natrona Heights satellite. Research opportunities are available.

About the UPMC Vision Institute
UPMC is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine which is consistently ranked among the nation’s leading medical schools, enjoying exceptional growth in its clinical, research and academic missions. UPMC is a large, diversified, multi-hospital tertiary care medical institution and consistently ranks among the top healthcare institutions in the nation.

The most fundamental function of the Vision Institute is to serve the community through patient care.

The Vision Institute has an outstanding residency program, training six residents each year in a four-year program. Graduates have gone on to clinical, research, and combined clinician-scientist careers. The department is at the forefront of continuing medical education. In addition to our 18 residents, we train fellows in the fields of retina, cornea, glaucoma, oculoplastic, neuro-ophthalmology and pediatric ophthalmology.

UPMC Vision Institute is consistently ranked highly for National Institutes of Health funding for departments of ophthalmology and has one of the top basic and clinical research programs in the country. Research focuses on ocular immunology, infectious disease, molecular genetics, molecular biology of retinal disease and glaucoma, and advanced diagnostic imaging technology development.

On March 14, 2019, UPMC broke ground for the UPMC Mercy Pavilion, a specialty facility that will stand on the campus of UPMC Mercy.  With a projected move-in date of May 1, 2023, the nine-story tower will serve patients who have diseases of the eye or vision impairment and those who need physical rehabilitation.  It contains 410,000 square feet of collaborative space for clinicians, researchers, educators, and industry partners, a state-of-the-art facility to deliver gene ad cell therapy for the eye, an innovative, fully mocked-up apartment where patients can relearn critical life skills, a 3-D street lab with simulated city streets, offices, and meeting rooms to help patients with low vision navigate their surroundings. Other areas in the building will include exam rooms, operating rooms, an optical shop, a pharmacy and therapy stations.

The University of Pittsburgh and UPMC are EEO/AA/M/F/Vets/Disabled Employers
