Uveitis Specialist (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor)

OREGON, Portland. Oregon Health & Science University, (OHSU), is a leading health and research university that strives for excellence in patient care, education, research, and community service. Casey Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology at OHSU is recruiting a full-time Uveitis specialist to join our current Uveitis faculty. 

This position will join an established and highly regarded University-based practice with clinical, research, and educational responsibilities, and will hold an academic appointment. It has a strong established referral base and an active surgical load. The group practice consists of 8 optometrists and 52 ophthalmologists offering sub-specialty services in cornea, vitreoretinal disease, ophthalmic pathology and oncology, uveitis and ocular immunology, glaucoma, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, low vision rehabilitation, and ophthalmic genetics.

Function/Duties of Position

This position is under the supervision of the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, Oregon Health & Science University, Casey Eye Institute. The primary duties include: providing clinical care to the University Hospital and Clinics, affiliated hospitals and clinics, and approved satellite locations; engaging in public service through consultative activities with non-university groups as approved by Department Chair; providing staffing to residents seeing Uveitis and Ocular Immunology patients; teaching residents and house staff about Uveitis and Ocular Immunology diseases; and performing research relevant to Uveitis and Ocular Immunology, providing clinical and/or research supervision for ophthalmology residents and fellows. May include activity in satellite locations. This position has the opportunity to implement research and/or special programs based on the needs of the population and in conjunction with Casey faculty based on the interests of the candidate.

Clinical: The clinic schedule will be assigned by departmental leadership (Chair, Department of Ophthalmology, and Head of the Uveitis Division). Clinical activities will be providing care to Uveitis and Ocular Immunology patients. A minimum of 6 half-day clinic sessions will be held per week.

Education: OHSU is a teaching facility and you may be expected to teach medical students and residents as well through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year. Full engagement with all teaching activities including resident case conferences, journal clubs, grand rounds, and CME events will be facilitated through virtual platforms and periodic in-person attendance at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, OR.

Research: There are resources available for start-up research and ongoing support via established processes and opportunities. Faculty interested in doing research may be eligible to apply for departmental research assistance and non-clinical time through the Director of Research. Research addressing efforts to improve access to care in rural and under-resourced communities and populations is a high Departmental priority and will be actively supported.

Administration: Administrative and other duties may be assigned based on department needs and your areas of expertise and interest. There will be opportunities to participate in departmental management and to serve on institutional committees.

Position Conditions/Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must be board certified or board eligible and have a strong interest in teaching and/or clinical research. Oregon and Washington state medical licensure is required. Fellowship-trained practitioners and/or fellows currently in training are encouraged to apply.

Strong clinical and patient assessment skills. Meticulous in all aspects of work. Requires excellent organizational skills and strong communication and patient relations skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with employees at all levels of the organization is essential. Demonstrated innovation, initiative, and creative problem-solving skills are imperative. Must be proactive and detail-oriented. The ability to work well independently and multi-task is critical. The ability to plan and organize technical work and to adapt to a changing work environment is critical. Must be able to assess and develop work tasks and systems in order to optimize clinic performance.

Education and Experience: Requires a current, valid MD license and completion of an accredited residency program and uveitis fellowship training. Must be board certified or eligible by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
