Impact of USMLE Step 1 Pass/Fail on Research Trends Among Ophthalmology Residency Applicants

This study evaluated changes in research volume and quality among ophthalmology residency applicants before and after USMLE Step 1 transitioned to pass/fail scoring. Researchers found a significant surge in research presentations and presentation-to-publication ratios, while overall peer-reviewed publications plateaued between 2022 and 2024. Importantly, publication quality—measured by journal impact factor and citation rates—remained stable, alongside a decline in volunteer activities and research gap years. For medical student educators, these findings indicate that applicants are expanding research volume in response to Step 1 changes without compromising publication quality.
