The mission of JAO is to communicate new information critical to the advancement of academic ophthalmology.

The Journal of Academic Ophthalmology (JAO) launched as the official publication of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) in January 2017. The JAO is a peer-reviewed, online, open-access publication focused on the academic pursuits of ophthalmology.

Ramanathan

Saras Ramanathan, MD

Dr. Saras Ramanathan, Editor-in-Chief, is the Steven P. Shearing Professor of Ophthalmology, Vice Chair for Resident Education, and Residency Program Director at the University of California San Francisco. She is a nationally recognized leader in residency teaching and ophthalmology education research. Prior to assuming the role as Editor-in-Chief, January 1, 2025, she served as Associate Editor for the journal.

Lindsey

Jennifer Lindsey, MD, MBA

Dr. Jennifer Lindsey is the Vice Chair for Education and Director of the Residency Program for Harvard Ophthalmology. She serves as the Associate Chief of Ophthalmic Education at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston, Massachusetts, where she practices Comprehensive Ophthalmology. She earned her MD from Baylor College of Medicine and her MBA from Vanderbilt's Owen School of Management. She is a dedicated educator and advocate, with particular interest in curriculum development, educational innovation, surgical teaching, and Veterans' care. She is active in multiple professional societies and currently serves as the President of the AUPO Program Directors Council.

Julius Oatts, MD, MHS

Dr. Julius Oatts is an Associate Professor at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Scheie Eye Institute, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His clinical expertise is in pediatric ophthalmology and childhood glaucoma. His research focus involves leveraging technology for the detection of preventable childhood vision loss in low resource settings. He mentors medical students, residents, and fellows and is passionate about the pediatric ophthalmology career pathway. He is a co-founder of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Mentorship (POM) Program.

Founding

Journal of Academic Ophthalmology was originally founded by Dr. Andrew Lee, Chair of Ophthalmology at Houston Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas. Later titled, Journal of Clinical & Academic Ophthalmology, Dr. Lee was instrumental in providing a voice for academic ophthalmology. AUPO acknowledges Dr. Lee’s commitment to the success of the journal and his support throughout this transition.
