DESCRIPTION

Wills Eye Ophthalmology Clinic is actively recruiting for a full-time faculty member to join the Department of Cataract and Primary Eye Care. The appointee will provide patient care in the area of general ophthalmology in a high volume outpatient setting at Wills Eye Hospital, as well as surgical care within comprehensive ophthalmology. Other duties will include resident education and scholarly activity. Compensation, including a full suite of benefit offerings, are dependent upon qualifications. Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a medical doctorate or equivalent, 2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Pennsylvania, 3) be board certified or eligible in ophthalmology; and 4) have completed an ACGME-approved ophthalmology residency or its equivalent.

We prefer applicants who can begin employment on or before 9/1/2021 and who have greater than two years of practice experience, but will review applicants who are at an earlier stage in their career.

Primary Function:

  • The Staff Ophthalmologist is responsible for offering high quality eye and vision care to patients through thorough examination and comprehensive treatments in a high volume outpatient setting. Performs eye exams, diagnoses and treats ophthalmic disease/pathology, prescribes medications and performs lens-based eye surgery. In this role, a primary focus will be resident training and education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Acts as a physician leader for residents, medical students and support staff. This position reports to the Medical Director of the Cataract and Primary Eye Care Clinic.
  2. Conveys a commitment to providing unmatched patient care by conducting all services in accordance with established protocols and recognized standards of care.
  3. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team and collaborates with subspecialists.
  4. Ensures all patients receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate recommendations to guarantee all visual lifestyle needs are addressed.
  5. Effectively communicates with ophthalmic technicians and office staff to ensure a flawless patient experience.
  6. Promptly documents medical services rendered to patients.
  7. Gains proficiency in the Health System's Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system in order to act as a resource to other physicians as needed.
  8. Participates in Performance Improvement priorities and in quality studies.
  9. Communicates with and educates patients and their family members on the complexities of their ophthalmic medical condition.
  10. Participates in weekly grand rounds and other normal medical staff activities.
  11. Demonstrates initiative in continuously improving personal knowledge, skills and work experience; and in improving departmental functioning.
  12. Promotes cost effectiveness within the department through the appropriate management of time, resources and daily patient flow.
  13. Interacts and communicates in a professional manner with the patients, medical staff, fellow employees, and other health team professionals.
  14. Cultivates internal and external departmental relationships at all times.
  15. Proposes recommendations as to methods and procedure improvements.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

Educational requirements:

  • Medical Degree (MD) and completion of an ACGME-approved ophthalmology residency.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Candidate must be board certified or board eligible and must be eligible to practice in the State of Pennsylvania
  • DEA. license; certification in assigned specialty

Experience:

  • Pre-existing practice experience, ideally with at least five to seven years of specialized medical training/experience required.
  • Strong commitment to teaching residents and fellows, and an interest in clinical and basic science research required. Extensive knowledge of physical assessment, differential diagnosis, pathophysiology, ocular pharmacology and management of acute and chronic eye conditions.
  • Demonstrates competency in same-day treatment and accurate timely referrals to ophthalmology subspecialists as needed.
  • Ability to apply the principles, theories, practices, and techniques of optometric practice, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, and mechanics of the human eye, visual processes, and detailed knowledge of ocular pharmacology and therapeutic.
