Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, Academic Retina Specialist

SUNY Upstate Medical University
Ophthalmology

The SUNY Upstate Medical University College of Medicine announces a national search for full-time faculty position as an academic Retina Specialist at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology.

The Department of Ophthalmology at Upstate Medical University was established over 140 years ago.  The Department’s history dates to 1872 when Dr. Charles E. Rider was appointed the first professor of ophthalmology at the university.  The Department is proud of its rich history while continuously renewing its commitment to advancing knowledge and patient care through research and innovation in patient care.  Its physicians and staff remain faithful to the Department’s motto: “To Learn, To Search, To Serve.”

The University Vision Care and Research Center (Department of Ophthalmology) has 60 community-based faculty and full-time physician and research faculty members.   The Department’s faculty serve on the consulting staff of the four hospitals operating in the Syracuse area: Upstate University Hospital, Crouse Hospital, Syracuse Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center.  The Department draws on the expertise and dedication of dozens of leading physicians and research scientists to provide medicine with advances in research, innovation in patient care, and quality instruction in the practice of ophthalmology.  There has been a decades-long tradition of fruitful collaboration between a large number of community-based ophthalmologists and a smaller number of ophthalmologists and non-physician faculty who are based at Upstate Medical University and the Syracuse VA Medical Center.

The successful acadmic candidate will be expected to integrate clinical duties with departmental educational programs for medical students, and residents. Engagement in and support of departmental clinical and discovery research is preferred.  The ideal candidate will have proven scholarly accomplishment and national recognition in academic ophthalmology as evidenced by involvement in academic societies at a national level.  Qualified candidates will be an MD or MD/PhD, American Board of Ophthalmology certified or Board eligible, advanced subspecialty training in vitreoretinal diseases, and eligible for a New York medical license.
